Master of Science in Physiotherapy

The Master of Science in Physiotherapy (M.Sc. PT) programme at the University of Peradeniya aims to prepare physiotherapists to be evidence based, clinical decision makers who effectively communicate with and educate the patients. As lifelong learners, reflective practitioners and leaders, they will employ current concepts of physiotherapy practice through prevention and active engagement. Master of Science graduates will validate physiotherapy through research, serve the health care needs of the community, contribute to the advancement of the profession, and demonstrate ethical and legal practice. The Master of Science in Physiotherapy (M.Sc. PT) programme is a 60 credits course (SLQF Level - 10) and the duration of the programme is 02 years (04 semesters). The programme allows the students to acquire specialization in the selected subfield in physiotherapy. The specialization titles of the M.Sc. PT will be awarded as follows, depend on the subfield undertaken by the candidates.
- Master of Science in Physiotherapy in Musculoskeletal Disorders and Sports (M.Sc. PT-MSS)
- Master of Science in Physiotherapy in Neurological Disorders (M.Sc. PT-ND)
- Master of Science in Physiotherapy in Cardio-Respiratory Disorders (M.Sc. PT-CRD)
- Master of Science in Physiotherapy in Community Rehabilitation (M.Sc. PT-CMR)
- Master of Science in Physiotherapy in Pediatrics (M.Sc. PT-Ped)
Entry Qualification
Student should have Bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy (Minimum of four-year
[120 credits]; Equal to
SLQF level 06) from a UGC recognized university/institution in Sri Lanka or
abroad to apply for the MSc in
Physiotherapy programme
Candidates will be selected through an interview
Programme Outcomes
Graduates of the M.Sc. Physiotherapy program will be able to
- Synthesize the knowledge of biological, physical, clinical sciences, and psychosocial behaviors for expertise in physiotherapy related clinical decision making.
- Independently perform physiotherapy assessments using evidence-informed tests and measures to identify impairments, activity limitations and participatory restrictions of clients with various disorders.
- Integrate basic medical sciences knowledge to design and implement evidence-based physiotherapy interventions using the patient management model in prevention and practice
- Demonstrate high standards of ethical and professional behavior in client management.
- Demonstrate effective communications in verbal and written formats, to facilitate the physiotherapists’ roles in education, consultation, patient management, and developing professional relationships.
- Design and carryout a research project to contribute the knowledge base of the profession.
- Incorporate leadership skills and exemplify professional roles and behaviors in multidisciplinary health care team.
- Display the skills of a reflective practitioner.
- Design a plan for ongoing personal and professional development.
